On 26. June students of VHS Aachen second chance school visited Malteser Emergency Service e.V. (section Aachen) during their work at Aachen Sanctuary Visit which is a big catholic event only every 7 years. During 10 days more than 100.000 pilgrims come to Aachen from all over Europe.
120 volunteers (per day!) of the Malteser Emergency Service provide medical and practical care during this event. The head of the Malteser unit (see left picture) informed us about the technical and organisational background of their work. He showed us their control center where all information and all missions are coordinated. Communication is provided by their own radio system. We were informed that most of the volunteers working for Malteser Emergency Service have a medical background at different levels but there are also social and technical volunteers.
